Japanese rice paper lamp for a Japandi, zen decor - Noguchi inspired

What is the Akari Collection?

The Akari collection is a renowned series of handcrafted paper lanterns designed by the influential Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi. "Akari" means "light" in Japanese, and these exquisite lamps are a celebration of the beauty and poetic elegance of illumination.

Isamu Noguchi first encountered traditional Japanese paper lanterns during a visit to Gifu, Japan, in the 1950s. Inspired by the simplicity and organic forms of these lanterns, he embarked on a creative journey to design his own collection of luminous sculptures that would blend modern aesthetics with traditional craftsmanship.

The Akari collection comprises a wide range of uniquely shaped lanterns, each crafted from washi paper, a traditional Japanese paper made from mulberry fibers. The paper is carefully stretched over delicate bamboo frames, creating sculptural forms that exude an ethereal and serene ambiance when illuminated.

What sets the Akari lamps apart is their ability to diffuse light softly and evenly, casting a warm and gentle glow that transforms any space into a tranquil haven. Noguchi's designs often feature organic, flowing shapes that evoke natural elements like clouds, water, and foliage, creating a poetic and harmonious connection between light and form.

The Akari lamps are not only works of art but also functional light fixtures suitable for a variety of living spaces. They can serve as striking centerpieces, serene accents, or even create a dreamlike installation when displayed together in an ensemble.

Beyond their visual appeal, the Akari collection has a deeper philosophical significance. Noguchi intended these lamps to be symbols of hope and peace, inspired by the post-war sentiment of rejuvenation and unity. Each lamp is a testament to the harmonious coexistence of East and West, blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern design sensibilities.

Today, the Akari collection continues to captivate art enthusiasts, interior designers, and collectors worldwide. These timeless luminaries have left an indelible mark on the world of design, embodying the enduring legacy of Isamu Noguchi and his belief in the power of art to illuminate and elevate the human spirit.
